OCTOBER/NOVEMBER 2007 NEWS

Light up Christmas with re:fresh

Outdoor lights depicting nativity scenes, stars, angels and peace doves are a new line for re:fresh books & christian resources in Tolworth.  They are offered as a Christian response to the popular trend to decorate homes and streets with images of Santa, Rudolph and snowmen.

The lights are suitable for indoor or outdoor use in homes, churches, schools or other buildings.  Prices range from £14.99 for a 60mm high star to £89.99 for a multi-coloured set of three nativity figures up to 1.2m high.  The figures are mounted in robust metal frames and come complete with hooks for suspension on walls or in windows, and with easel supports for free-standing use.  Pegs are also supplied for use as ground anchors in gardens.  Each unit has a 3m weatherproof cable.  Weatherproof 7m extension cables are also available.

A demonstration unit can be inspected at re:fresh books and details of the various units, with prices, can be seen on the re:fresh website,  Units are sold to order only and there is a ten-day delivery so orders need to be in as soon as possible to be sure of delivery.  A price list is available on request.

“We were impressed when we saw the lights at a trade show in February and immediately ordered a unit for our own use in the shop window over Christmas” says re:fresh Manager, Marguerite Williams.  “At Christmas we try to use our window to tell passers-by the true story of Christmas.  We are thrilled when we overhear people reading the Christmas story, or parents explaining the nativity scene to their children.  We believe the illuminated Nativity Panel will add impact to the message this year.”

Re:fresh also has a large stock of attractive Christmas cards, with the emphasis once again on Charity Cards from Tearfund, Samaritan’s Purse, Toybox and the Leprosy Mission.  There are also calendars, diaries, Advent calendars, candles and numerous gift items.

The special 3rd Birthday offers, exclusive to re:fresh, will continue through November as long as stocks last.  They include a number of brand new books including the Candle Beginners Bible for children;  3:16 The Numbers of Hope, Max Lucado’s study of John 3:16;  Baroness Cox – Eyewitness to a broken world, a new biography of this remarkable Christian woman; and The Bible Promise Book, an ideal gift packed with inspirational readings.

A wide range of DVDs and CDs includes the latest Hillsong album, Saviour King and Chris Tomlin’s See the Morning.   The Amazing Grace DVD would make an excellent Christmas present while there are special offers on the popular Nooma DVDs.

Why not make re:fresh books your One Stop Shop for cards, books, gifts, and even Christmas lights, this Christmas?

Holiday reading 2007

Suntan oil, swimwear, foreign currency … and don’t forget books!  It’s time to make those lists for Summer Holidays if you haven’t already done so.   Even if you’re staying at home there is often more time for reading during the Holiday season.    Re:fresh books has some superb offers on Christian fiction, biographies and other books during July and August.  And don’t forget, re:fresh now has a loyalty card scheme.

Take it & Leave it
Many holiday accommodations have a ‘library’ corner where guests can leave books they have finished reading and pick up books left by other guests.  Why not take a good Christian book on holiday and leave it for somebody else?   Think carefully about the book – choose one with a title, cover and blurb that will appeal to non-Christians.  Biographies like Tony Anthony’s Taming the Tiger or Christian Fiction such as Francine Rivers’ Redeeming Love are ideal.  Re:fresh currently has an exclusive  ‘Three for the price of two’ offer – why not buy two holiday books for yourself and take the third to leave?

Ten re:fresh suggestions for Holiday Reading
Listed below are ten books you might consider taking on holiday.   The first seven are suitable for the re:fresh ‘Take it and leave it’ initiative – take it on holiday and leave it behind for somebody else to read.

• Taming the Tiger by Tony Anthony                                    (Biography)
The true story of a three-times World Kung Fu Champion.   This book includes contact details for Avanti ministries, the evangelistic organisation headed up by Tony Anthony.   Ideal to leave for non-Christians to pick up and read.

• The Cross and the Switchblade by David Wilkerson     (Biography)
Still a top seller after four decades.  The story of David Wilkerson’s mission to reach New York’s gangs and drug-pushers, including gang leader Nikki Cruz.

• Out of the Black Shadows by Stephen Lungu and Anne Coomes    (Biography)
Instead of throwing bombs, he stayed to listen…..  The story of a teenage member of the Black Shadow urban gang in Zimbabwe who lived on the streets and was sent to fire bomb an evangelistic event.

• End of the Spear by Steve Saint                (Biography)
“When two worlds collide, one family faces the ultimate challenge” says the sub-title.  Now available in paperback.  Fifty years on from the massacre of five missionaries in Equador, this book picks up the story of Steve Saint’s relationship with his father’s killers.

• Out of the Silent Planet by CS Lewis                          (Fiction)
Imagine a world that has not known the impact of sin.  What would they make of our morals and our world.  First published in 1938, the first of CS Lewis’ Science Fiction trilogy still raises some interesting issues.  If this doesn’t appeal, take another CS Lewis book – re:fresh has plenty from which to choose.

• Redeeming Love  by Francine Rivers  (Fiction)
The story of Hosea in a fictional setting.   Through the fictional characters, this moving and utterly gripping novel constantly touches you with the wonder of God’s passionate and unfailing love.   When you read at the end that Francine wrote it as an act of worship, you know she has fully achieved her aim.  There are many novels by Francine Rivers at re:fresh and most would be very suitable for leaving at your holiday accommodation

• The Living Church by John Stott
If you haven’t read John Stott’s 50th book yet, read it this summer.  This is one to bring home again … and read again.  Vintage Stott.  Essential reading for church leaders.

• The Spreading Flame by FF Bruce
Have you ever thought “I must learn about early Christianity and the New Testament documents”?  Just re-published, The Spreading Flame is a classic, first published in 1953.   It traces the rise and progress of Christianity from its first beginnings to the conversion of the English.  Read the true story of Constantine, the collation of the New Testament documents and much more, by a great British scholar and theologian.

• Prayer by Philip Yancey
Not read it yet?  Why not take Yancey with you on holiday?   He explores the questions  What is prayer … What difference does it make … Why and how should we pray … what about unanswered prayer and what about prayer for healing?

• Facing your Giants by Max Lucado
Bills you can’t pay, people you can’t please, habits you can’t break, failures you can’t forget and a future you can’t face.  The story of David reminds us that God can take us with our failings and feelings of rejection and enable us to face our Goliaths.

MAY 2007 NEWS

Re:fresh launches a loyalty card

Re:fresh books & christian resources has introduced a loyalty card scheme for customers who regularly buy books, cards, music, gift and other goods at the Tolworth shop.

Every time the customer spends £10 or more on personal purchases in any one visit, it will be recorded on their card.  If they fill the card within a year they will receive a £10 re:fresh gift voucher.  The scheme covers any purchases made in the shop, including book tokens and gift vouchers – even books on special offer!   It is for personal purchases only; separate discount schemes apply for churches, schools and other groups.

Manager, Marguerite Williams says “We really appreciate the loyalty shown by many people who buy their books and other goods in re:fresh.  At the same time, we want to encourage more people to come and see the wide range of Bibles, Christian books, cards, gifts, CDs and DVDs we have available.  Like many other Christian bookshops, we are challenged by competition from the Internet but we want people to see us as an extension to the mission of the local church – a shop window for the Good News of Jesus.”

Re:fresh books and christian resources is at 23 The Broadway, Tolworth, a short distance from Tolworth Tower and Marks & Spencer.  It is close to the Tolworth Junction on the A3 with free parking for up to an hour in the public/M&S car park below Tolworth Tower.  Buses (406, 418, 265, 281, K1 and K2) stop outside Marks & Spencer.

JANUARY 2007 NEWS

Wilberforce and the Abolition of the Slave Trade
The coming months will see increasing interest in William Wilberforce and the Abolition of the Slave Trade.  February 23 marks the 200th Anniversary of the passing of the Bill to abolish the transatlantic slave trade.  A month later, on March 25 1807, it became law.  A feature film on the life of William Wilberforce will be released in March.  Other National events will include services in Westminster Abbey and York Minster, a new issue of postage stamps and a new £2.00 coin celebrating the abolition of the slave trade.

Interest in these events offers church leaders, youth and childrens’ workers an excellent opportunity to explain the role of this great Evangelical reformer in a defining moment in British history.  Re:fresh books has a number of books about Wilberforce including a new Edition of John Pollock’s acclaimed biography Wilberforce; a new book by Stephen Tompkins William Wilberforce a biography; Kevin Belmonte’s Travel with William Wilberforce and ac children's book, William Wilberforce the Freedom Fighter by Derick Bingham.  (More details on the re:fresh website, www.refreshbooks.co.uk).  The February issue of Christianity Magazine, also available from re:fresh, has a useful four-page feature on how to churches can link into the bicentenary and the film Amazing Grace.

Re:fresh in the news again
The February issue of Christianity also includes a ‘briefing’ article from re:fresh books and christian resources.  This looks at the role of Christian bookshops in the modern retail climate.  It makes the point that Christian bookshops represent a Christian presence on the High Street and are open at times when most churches are closed!

Manga New Testament now in stock
Described as a publishing phenomenon, The Manga Bible is a Bible in cartoon format.   Manga is regarded as a literary style in countries like Japan and Korea and is catching on in America and the UK.  It relies on strong visual images combined with pacy storytelling to convey a message.   Illustrated by Siku, described as “one of the UK’s hottest comic talents” it comes in two versions: The Manga Bible – NT Extreme which also includes the Today’s New International Version (TNIV) text and The Manga Bible – NT Raw, which is the basic Manga New Testament.  Published by Hodder Religious, it is expected to appeal particularly to teenagers and young adults.  The whole Bible is scheduled for publication later this year.

Materials for Lent and Easter
Lent begins on February 21.  Re:fresh has study materials suitable for personal or group study during Lent and is happy to extend its normal church and school discount terms to any group ordering five or more books.  Studies new this year, are the Bible Reading Fellowship’s The Road to Emmaus, and the CAFOD Turning Points.
For Easter, we have a good stock of Easter cards and a new Candle children’s book My First story of Easter.

In retrospect
Looking back over the last year, we at re:fresh books have much for which to praise God.  In February we were thrilled to be awarded ‘Small Retailer of the Year’ at the Christian Booksellers Convention.  As we approached our second anniversary, we achieved our most optimistic budget for the year and enjoyed an encouraging celebration at St George’s Church, Tolworth.
Over Christmas we sought to present a positive Christian message on Tolworth Broadway with a window display telling “the true story of Christmas” from Luke’s Gospel and offering a free copy of Luke to anybody who came in and asked.  An encouraging number of people took up this offer, which we plan to repeat at Easter.  During the year we were invited to a number of church services to share the re:fresh story and were encouraged by the response.  Most important of all, there have been stories of God working in the lives of individual people through the ministry of re:fresh.

Thank you for your continued support and prayers for re:fresh books and the teamPlease pray for daily wisdom in our conversations with people – for the ability to discern  the real needs of those who visit re:fresh.  Please don’t forget your local bookshop in the quiet months of January and February!
